The tension grew during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, where Trump criticised Spain’s stance and leadership.
Trump said he told Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to cut off all dealings with Spain. He claimed Spain refused to let US forces use joint bases, adding that the US could use the bases anyway. He also attacked Spain for not paying 5 percent of its GDP to NATO like other members.
Trump stated, “Spain has absolutely nothing that we need, other than great people. They have great people, but they don’t have great leadership”. His remarks raised concerns about growing friction between the US and a key NATO ally.
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said the joint use bases under Spanish sovereignty will not be used for actions outside international law or the UN Charter. After the dispute, several US aircraft reportedly left bases in Rota and Morón.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez rejected unilateral military actions by the US and Israel, calling them an escalation that increases global instability. He also said Spain opposes actions by Iran but warns against a prolonged war in the Middle East. Analysts say the dispute could weaken NATO unity and strain transatlantic relations further.

The trade threat and base dispute show rising tension between the US and Spain over Iran policy and military cooperation.
The issue shows serious disagreement between America and Spain on military action. Spain refused to support strikes against Iran through its bases. If tensions grow, it can affect NATO unity and trade ties. Both sides need dialogue to avoid bigger conflict and protect cooperation.
