WASHINGTON (Web Desk): US President Donald Trump announced a new 35% tariff on goods imported from Canada starting August 1, significantly escalating trade tensions between the US and Canada.

Trump also warned other countries that if they do not make concessions on American exports, they will also have to pay double tariffs. We are also considering imposing a general tariff of between 15 and 20 percent on all other countries.

Trump sent letters to several countries around the world informing them that if they do not reach a trade agreement with the United States before August 1, tariffs at a new rate will be applied to them.

The most important of these letters was sent to Canada, America s largest trading partner. A deadline of July 21 has been set for the two countries to reach an agreement.

At the end of the letter, Trump wrote that if Canada cooperates with us in preventing fentanyl, we may review the tariff policy given in this letter, which may be adjusted up or down based on our mutual relationship.

There has been no official response from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, but Canadian opposition leader Pierre Poilievre has called the tariffs another unjustified attack on the Canadian economy.

He wrote on social media that Canada has long been a trusted ally and loyal friend of the United States, and these tariffs will harm both countries.
