Los Angeles: Hollywood mocked God, and hours later fires ravaged this ‘Godless town’

(Shahzad Ahmad) Hollywood mocked the name of God hours before the Los Angeles wildfires began devastating California in an unprecedented and catastrophic manner, with dangerous winds still blowing, worsening the situation across this 'Godless town.'

A day before the wildfires struck, an event called  The 2025 Golden Globe Awards  took place, celebrating the best in cinema and television. While Hollywood stars were recognized for their performances, Nikki Glaser hosted the first award show of the season. In her speech, she mocked the name of God in a demeaning way, ridiculing Him and suggesting that Hollywood gave Him zero recognition, despite Him being the Creator of the universe. The audience laughed as she continued making jokes about God."Comedian Nikki Glaser while hosting the awards last Sunday reflected on the lack of acknowledgment of God during acceptance speeches from winners halfway through the show.

The host pointed out that none of the acceptance speeches in the first half of the ceremony mentioned God, adding with a remark that it was "no surprise in this godless town."

During a "mid-show recap," Glaser praised the speeches as "on fire" and provided a breakdown of the most frequently mentioned groups and individuals in the winners  remarks. She noted that fellow cast and crew members were the most commonly thanked, with 11 mentions. The other notable group mentioned were the winners  mothers, who received three shout-outs.

Glaser commented that "God, Creator of the universe" was "not mentioned at all" and highlighted that "Access Hollywood" host Mario Lopez was referenced in one speech. She joked that the lack of references to God in the speeches was "no surprise in this Godless town."

Her comments underscore the perception that Hollywood and the entertainment industry are generally secular and often at odds with traditional Christian values. Despite this environment, celebrities have still acknowledged God in their acceptance speeches at awards ceremonies in the past, including the Golden Globes.

In 2023, actress Angela Bassett emphasized the role of faith in her acceptance speech after winning the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her performance in Wakanda Forever. She quoted author Toni Morrison, who said, "life is already a miracle of chance just waiting for you to order its destiny," and shared her belief that fulfilling one’s destiny requires courage, patience, and a true sense of self.

Bassett then added, "It’s not easy because the past is circuitous, and it has many unexpected detours, but by the grace of God I stand here." She expressed her gratitude to the Hollywood Foreign Press for the honor, as well as for Wakanda Forever. "My mother always said, ‘good things come to those who pray.’ I see the truth of that every day as we welcome each new day as a family."

On the other hand, actress Michelle Williams’ 2020 acceptance speech after winning the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie had a darker tone. She declared that her career would not have been possible "without employing a woman’s right to choose," referring to abortion. Williams also urged women in the audience to "thank God or whomever you pray to that we live in a country founded on the principle that I am free to live by my faith and you are free to live by yours."

In 2017, actor Casey Affleck, upon receiving the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama, declared, "God is Love." He acknowledged that actor Denzel Washington had previously shared the same sentiment during another awards ceremony.
