The government has reduced the customs value of used smartphones, leading to a significant cut in PTA taxes on high-end models such as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Since PTA tax is calculated based on customs value, sales tax, and mobile levy, the revised valuation has made mobile phone registration relatively cheaper for consumers. The move is being seen as long-awaited relief for users struggling with high registration costs.
Under the new rates, the PTA tax on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max has been fixed at Rs55,000 when registered through a passport. For registration using a CNIC, the tax will be Rs70,000. These figures reflect a noticeable reduction compared to previous rates, easing the burden on buyers of premium smartphones.
Officials say the decision has been designed to benefit both buyers and sellers in the local mobile market. With a sharp drop in legal registration costs, smartphone prices in Pakistan are now closer to global market levels, reducing incentives for illegal use.

According to details available on the PTA website, imported phones can be registered using either a passport or CNIC, with different tax slabs applied to each option. For passport registration, phones valued up to $30 are taxed at Rs430, while devices priced above $500 face Rs27,600 plus 17 percent sales tax.
For CNIC registration, phones valued up to $30 are taxed at Rs550, while devices above $500 attract Rs37,007 plus 17 percent sales tax. The revised structure is expected to boost legal registrations and stabilize the smartphone market.
