(Web Desk): Pakistan is set to launch its first internet service based on a satellite, with Elon Musk's Starlink, likely to start operations in the country before the end of this year.

According to media reports, Starlink has indicated willingness to adhere to Pakistan s legal and regulatory framework. Earlier it had filed a request for registration with the concerned national bodies.

Authorities have disclosed that the Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board (P-SARB) is in the final stages of creating an international regulatory framework for satellite services. The framework will serve as the basis for granting satellite internet providers their licenses. Once developed, Starlink will officially be registered, and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will issue the company its operational license.

Ahead of this launch, P-SARB recently organized a workshop which was graced by influential players of the satellite industry. The event saw Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja also in attendance. Global technology companies like Shanghai Telecom, Amazon, and OneWeb have indicated interest in entering Pakistan s satellite internet sector. Starlink is, however, the first to have officially filed its application under the changing framework.

Reports also indicate that Elon Musk may join the official launch ceremony in Pakistan later this year. Already operational in some South Asian countries, Starlink is likely to revolutionize internet connectivity and further bolster Pakistan s digital backbone, especially in remote and under-developed areas.

The authorities feel that the launch of Starlink s satellite internet will speed up the digital revolution in the country, expand internet coverage, and contribute to economic growth through enhanced revenue generation. They also assured that the operations of Starlink do not present any security threat to Pakistan s national institutions.
