Sri Lanka’s rising cricket star Dunith Wellalage faced a devastating personal tragedy during the Asia Cup 2025 clash against Afghanistan at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. While Wellalage was representing his country on the field, his father, Suranga Wellalage, reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack. The young all-rounder only learned of the heartbreaking news after the match had ended.
A video circulating on social media captured the emotional moment when Sri Lanka’s coach, Sanath Jayasuriya, informed Wellalage about the tragedy. In the footage, Jayasuriya can be seen placing his arm around the cricketer’s shoulder and consoling him, highlighting the pain of the moment.
Former Sri Lankan player Russel Arnold, speaking on commentary, recalled Suranga Wellalage’s cricketing background. Suranga had captained Prince of Wales College in his youth, while Arnold himself captained St. Peter’s College during the same era. Arnold expressed his sorrow, saying, “It’s very sad to hear. The news was just broken to Dunith. Our condolences to the family.” He added that such a tragedy would naturally mute the team’s celebrations but could also strengthen their unity as they head into the Super 4 stage.
On the field, Dunith endured a difficult day with the ball. He conceded 49 runs in four overs, managing to claim just one wicket. Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi hit him for five sixes in a single over, smashing a rapid 60 off just 22 balls. Despite Afghanistan’s spirited fight, Sri Lanka secured victory in their final Group B game.

For Wellalage, however, the win was overshadowed by the immense personal loss. His father, who never made it to the national side despite his school cricket achievements, had been a strong influence in his son’s journey. The timing of the tragedy left teammates, fans, and the wider cricketing world shaken, turning celebration into sorrow.
