LAHORE: Pakistan's inclusion in the 2025 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup is uncertain, as the Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) has omitted the team from its initial list of invitees.

Despite Pakistan’s strong history in the tournament, the exclusion reportedly stems from an outstanding financial dispute between the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and MHF.

The issue dates back to the previous edition of the tournament, where Pakistan finished runner-up to Japan. According to local media sources, the dispute arose due to financial mismanagement by a former PHF official, leaving the federation indebted to the MHF. Frustrated by the unresolved matter, Malaysian organizers have opted not to invite Pakistan, despite its impressive past performances.

However, PHF officials are actively working to resolve the issue, with hopes of securing an invitation later this week.

As one of the most successful teams in Azlan Shah Cup history, Pakistan has won the tournament three times and finished as runners-up on seven occasions. Missing out on such a prestigious event would not only hinder the team’s development but also be a setback for Pakistan hockey’s international standing.

The 2025 Azlan Shah Cup, scheduled for November, will also see the absence of defending champions Japan, who have opted out due to prior commitments. Originally a biennial event when launched in 1983, the tournament became an annual competition in 1998 due to its growing significance.

Australia remains the most successful team, with 10 titles, followed by India (5) and Pakistan (3).
