Several motorways and highways across Punjab’s central region have been reopened for traffic after an improvement in visibility, the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) confirmed on Thursday. The routes were earlier closed as a precautionary measure due to severe fog, which significantly reduced visibility and posed serious safety risks.
According to NHMP officials, the closures were implemented to protect public life and property amid dangerously low visibility levels. Lahore Eastern Bypass was fully shut during the night due to intense fog, while key motorway sections — M-3 from Faizpur to Jaranwala and M-2 from Lahore to Hiran Minar — were also closed to traffic.

Motorway Police Central Region spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed stated that with visibility improving in the morning hours, the affected motorway sections were reopened, allowing traffic to resume under monitored conditions. However, authorities warned that fog may return during late-night and early-morning hours as the winter season continues.
The NHMP strongly advised motorists to strictly follow lane discipline, warning that lane violations during fog can lead to fatal accidents. Citizens were urged to avoid unnecessary travel and, where possible, plan journeys during relatively safer daylight hours. Officials noted that travel between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm is generally considered safer during foggy conditions.
Drivers have been instructed to use fog lights and low-beam headlights, reduce speed, maintain extra distance from vehicles ahead, and avoid sudden braking or lane changes. Commuters were also encouraged to consider alternative routes such as GT Road if motorway conditions deteriorate again.

The Motorway Police emphasized that fog conditions can worsen unexpectedly, particularly on high-speed routes connecting major cities. Authorities confirmed that traffic conditions are being continuously monitored, and additional restrictions may be imposed if visibility drops again.
For real-time updates, route guidance, or emergency assistance, motorists can contact the Motorway Police helpline 130, which remains operational round the clock. Officials reiterated that public cooperation is essential to ensure road safety
