Lahore witnesses significant improvement in air quality
(Web Desk): Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has improved to 181 in mid-December, reflecting noticeably better air quality levels thanks to the Punjab government's anti-smog measures.

Officials said the improvement reflects the effectiveness of the provincial government’s zero-tolerance anti-smog policy, under which strict and indiscriminate action is being taken against pollution-causing sources. Enforcement teams have intensified checks on industrial emissions, brick kilns, and smoke-emitting vehicles across the city to curb air pollution.

Weather conditions have also played a supportive role in reducing smog intensity. Authorities confirmed that wind speeds in Lahore are currently ranging between 8 and 10 kilometres per hour, helping disperse smog particles. The temperature is expected to remain around 24 degrees Celsius, with overall weather conditions considered favourable for improved air quality.

On the directions of Chief Minister Punjab, anti-smog squads remain fully active with round-the-clock monitoring across Lahore to ensure strict enforcement of environmental regulations. Officials said inspections and penalties against violators are being carried out without discrimination.

Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb urged citizens to continue exercising caution despite the improvement. She advised the public to wear protective masks, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, and take extra care if suffering from respiratory or allergic conditions. She also appealed to residents to follow official guidelines and cooperate with authorities in the fight against smog.

Authorities credited the improvement to intensified efforts under the vision of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif to reduce pollution and protect public health. Expressing satisfaction over the progress, the chief minister said Lahore’s air quality has improved by 42 percent compared to last year.

According to official data, air quality showed improvement on 23 out of 30 days in November 2025 compared to the same period last year. In November 2024, Lahore’s AQI stood at 453, while it dropped to 261 in November 2025. Officials noted that air pollution had reached its peak in November last year, making the current decline particularly significant.

Despite the positive trend, authorities have issued public health advisories for areas where smog levels remain elevated. Citizens have been urged to limit outdoor exposure, reduce travel, maintain indoor air hygiene, and use protective masks when outside.

Patients suffering from asthma, allergies, and respiratory illnesses have been advised to avoid early morning exercise, while children and senior citizens are encouraged to remain indoors as a precaution. Officials stressed that continued public cooperation is essential to sustain and further improve Lahore’s air quality in the coming weeks.
