According to data from the Global Environmental Department, the country’s largest metropolitan and industrial centre continues to face severe pollution driven mainly by vehicle emissions and industrial activity.
Air quality in Punjab also showed no significant improvement. Lahore was ranked the fifth most polluted city, with particulate matter measured at 198. Experts warn that winter smog, cross-border pollution, crop residue burning, and local emissions collectively worsen air quality in both Karachi and Lahore.

Health professionals say hospitals are preparing for a likely rise in respiratory cases as pollution levels increase. Authorities are monitoring the situation and advising citizens to follow official guidance to limit exposure to hazardous air.
Environmental specialists emphasize the need for coordinated measures, including stricter control on emissions and an end to open burning, to reduce health risks during the peak smog season.
