(Web Desk): Dense fog across Punjab has forced motorway closures and traffic restrictions, disrupting travel in Lahore and other cities as Motorway Police issue safety advisories amid dangerously low visibility.

Dense fog once again engulfed plain areas of Punjab, including Lahore, during the night between Sunday and Monday, severely disrupting routine life and road traffic across the province.

According to the National Highway & Motorway Police (NHMP), extremely low visibility—ranging from zero to 100 meters in several areas—prompted the closure of multiple motorway sections to prevent accidents.

Motorway M-2 has been closed from Lahore to Kot Momin, with heavy vehicles barred from using the route. Entry of heavy traffic has also been prohibited on Motorway M-3 between Faizpur and Jaranwala, and on Motorway M-4 from Pindi Bhattian to Abdul Hakim. Meanwhile, the Lahore–Sialkot Motorway (M-11) has been completely shut for all types of vehicles due to dense fog.

Dense fog has also engulfed several stretches of the National Highway, including Lahore, Pattoki, Okara, and Sahiwal. Visibility is also severely affected in Chichawatni, Iqbal Nagar, Mian Channu, Khanewal, Multan, and Bahawalpur.

A spokesperson said that visibility on parts of the National Highway has dropped to between zero and 100 metres at some locations, posing serious risks for motorists.

Motorway Police officials warned that lane violations and speeding in foggy conditions significantly increase the risk of serious accidents. Authorities advised motorists to travel only during safer hours, preferably between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, when visibility typically improves.

Drivers have been urged to use alternative routes such as the Grand Trunk (GT) Road, avoid unnecessary travel—especially late at night and early morning—and strictly follow safety guidelines.

The NHMP issued a comprehensive safety advisory, urging motorists to reduce speed, use fog lights and low-beam headlights, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and avoid sudden braking or lane changes. Officials stressed that strict lane discipline is critical during foggy conditions.

Authorities said fog is expected to persist intermittently during the winter season, particularly during nighttime and early morning hours. Motorway Police confirmed that the situation is being monitored continuously and routes will be reopened once visibility improves.

Motorists have been advised to stay updated through official traffic advisories and contact the Motorway Police helpline 130 for real-time information, route guidance, or emergency assistance. Officials reiterated that public cooperation remains vital to ensure road safety during Punjab’s ongoing winter fog spell.
