(Web Desk): The US Embassy in Islamabad cancelled visa appointments after violent protests left 23 dead across Pakistan.

The US Embassy in Islamabad shut down visa and citizen services after deadly protests erupted across Pakistan over reports of Iran’s supreme leader being killed.

The United States mission announced it had cancelled all visa and American Citizen Services appointments scheduled for March 2 at its embassy in Islamabad and consulates in Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar.

In a security alert issued a day earlier, the mission said it was closely monitoring demonstrations outside its diplomatic facilities in Karachi and Lahore, along with calls for protests near the embassy in Islamabad and the consulate in Peshawar.

US government personnel were directed to restrict their movements until further notice. American citizens in Pakistan were advised to avoid large crowds, monitor local media, remain alert, and update their registration with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.

The protests broke out after reports claimed the United States had killed Ali Khamenei in a strike at his residence. The reports sparked anger in several cities, triggering clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement agencies.

At least 23 protesters were reportedly killed nationwide, including 10 outside the US consulate in Karachi, 11 in Skardu and two in Islamabad.

In Karachi and Lahore, police used tear gas to disperse crowds after protesters attempted to breach diplomatic compounds. Authorities in Punjab and Islamabad later imposed Section 144, banning public gatherings to contain the unrest.
