In a historic move, Maryam Nawaz has officially inaugurated Pakistan’s first-ever E-Taxi Scheme in Punjab, introducing 1,100 electric vehicles (EVs) in the first phase.
The Punjab government says the initiative aims to promote eco-friendly transport, women empowerment, and employment opportunities, while reducing fuel costs and carbon emissions.
1,100 Electric Vehicles in First Phase
Under the first phase of the E-Taxi Scheme, 1,100 electric vehicles will be distributed to eligible drivers across Punjab.
Officials confirmed that:
- 30% quota is reserved for women drivers
- Separate colored vehicles will be allocated for female drivers to ensure safety and visibility
- “Pink taxis” will operate specifically for women passengers
CM Maryam Nawaz announced that the first batch of e-taxis will hit the roads within 48 hours.

Major Financial Support from Punjab Government
The Punjab government will provide significant financial relief to applicants:
- 50% down payment for male drivers
- 60% down payment for female drivers
- Registration fees covered
- Fitness test charges covered
- Token tax paid by government
Drivers will repay the remaining vehicle cost in easy five-year installments, making the scheme accessible for middle-income applicants.
Safety Measures: Panic Button Linked to Safe Cities
To ensure passenger and driver security, each e-taxi will be equipped with a panic button connected to the Punjab Safe Cities Authority.
This system will allow real-time monitoring and emergency response.
Ride-Hailing Platform Integration
The e-taxis will be registered with popular ride-hailing platforms including:
- inDrive
- Yango
This integration ensures drivers can start earning immediately through digital booking systems.

Charging Infrastructure & Digital Payments
The Punjab government will install fast EV chargers at public locations to facilitate uninterrupted service.
Additionally, digital payment options will be introduced to modernize fare collection and enhance transparency.

The government says the E-Taxi Scheme will:
- Promote green transportation
- Reduce urban air pollution
- Lower fuel dependency
- Create new job opportunities
- Empower women drivers
CM Maryam Nawaz also announced plans to introduce green buses in all tehsils of Punjab, expanding sustainable public transport across the province.
Officials describe the initiative as a landmark reform in Pakistan’s transport history, combining environmental sustainability with economic empowerment.
