In a landmark move for green mobility in Pakistan, the Punjab government has launched the country’s first-ever e-Taxi scheme, introducing 1,100 electric taxis with 30% of the fleet allocated specifically for women drivers.
The initiative has been rolled out under the leadership of Maryam Nawaz as part of the Transport Vision 2030, aimed at promoting eco-friendly transportation and inclusive employment opportunities across the province.
1,100 Electric Taxis to Promote Green Transport
According to the Punjab Transport & Mass Transit Department, the new e-Taxi scheme will initially deploy 1,100 electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce carbon emissions and modernize urban commuting.
Officials say the program supports:
- Sustainable mobility solutions
- Reduction in fuel consumption
- Lower urban air pollution
- Green investment initiatives
The move aligns with Punjab’s broader environmental strategy to promote clean energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

30% Quota for Women Drivers
A key highlight of the scheme is the 30% reservation for women drivers, marking a significant step toward gender inclusion in Pakistan’s transport sector.
Maryam Nawaz emphasized that women’s participation in public transport employment will:
- Enhance economic empowerment
- Promote gender equality
- Create safe commuting options
- Strengthen household incomes
The initiative aims to break traditional employment barriers and encourage more women to join the workforce.
Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Boost
The e-Taxi program is also designed to generate employment opportunities for youth by encouraging entrepreneurship in the ride-hailing and public transport sector.
Drivers will be able to earn sustainable livelihoods while contributing to cleaner cities and improved urban mobility.
Government officials believe the project will:
- Improve commuting standards
- Support small business growth
- Increase local economic activity
- Modernize Punjab’s transport infrastructure
Expansion Plan and National Model
Authorities have indicated that the Punjab e-Taxi scheme will expand gradually, allowing more drivers — particularly women — to participate in the program.
Policy experts suggest the initiative could serve as a model for other provinces seeking to adopt electric vehicle transport systems and inclusive employment frameworks.
With Pakistan moving toward sustainable development goals, the launch of the first e-Taxi scheme signals a strong commitment to eco-friendly transportation, smart mobility, and inclusive growth.
