LAHORE (Web Desk): The highly-anticipated e-taxi scheme draw will be held in the last week of November, creating a buzz among the over 28,000 individuals who have applied for the program.

This interest-free program, launched by the Punjab government on September 17, 2025, aims to revolutionize public transport. The Provincial Transport Department has sent the complete list of applicants to the Bank of Punjab, which will oversee the transparent balloting process. The huge number of applicants underscores the public's eagerness to adopt electric vehicles and benefit from the zero-interest financing.

Following the computerized draw, successful applicants will be contacted to submit their down payments. Officials have confirmed that those who complete the required deposit will receive their new electric taxis, imported from China, within three to four months. The initial phase will see the distribution of 1,100 e-taxis, with 30 units specifically reserved for women drivers to promote female empowerment in the transport sector.

To ensure the success and sustainability of the initiative, the Punjab government is actively working on the necessary infrastructure. This includes setting up a province-wide electric vehicle charging network. Furthermore, an online portal has been developed to streamline the application process and manage future documentation, making the entire procedure more efficient and accessible for all drivers.

The massive response shows a strong demand for subsidized electric vehicles, but the real test is the rollout. The government's focus on both the vehicles and the charging network is crucial; without a solid infrastructure, the environmental and economic benefits of these new e-taxis won't be fully realized.
