(Web Desk): Iranian Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi sentenced to seven years and six months, sparking global concern over her health and rights.

Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner and prominent human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has been sentenced to an additional seven years and six months in prison by an Iranian court.

According to her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, a court in the northeastern city of Mashhad handed Mohammadi six years in prison on charges of “assembly and conspiracy” and another 18 months for “propaganda against the state.” The court also banned her from leaving Iran for two years and ordered her to serve two years of internal exile in the eastern region of Khosf.

Her lawyer said he was able to speak with her for the first time since December 14. During the conversation, he learned about the new sentence and restrictions imposed by the court.

Mohammadi was arrested in December during a memorial ceremony, where authorities accused her of making “provocative statements.” Her family claims she was physically assaulted during the arrest and later hospitalized due to her injuries.

The Narges Foundation described the recent trial as a “sham” and confirmed that Mohammadi has been on a hunger strike since February 2. Her health reportedly worsened, and she was taken to hospital again before being returned to detention.

Her husband, Taghi Rahmani, said she refused to defend herself in court because she does not recognize the legitimacy of Iran’s judiciary.

Mohammadi has already spent more than 10 years in prison. With the latest ruling, her total combined sentences now reach 44 years.
