The federal government has launched a new route for Islamabad’s electric bus service, extending operations to Rawat as part of efforts to promote eco-friendly public transportation and reduce traffic congestion.
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi inaugurated the new electric buses along with modern bus depots and charging stations. With this expansion, the total number of electric buses in the capital has reached 160, strengthening the city’s sustainable transport network.
During the inauguration, the minister personally traveled on the electric bus with senior officials and received a detailed briefing on fleet operations, depot facilities, and charging infrastructure. Authorities said the depot now has space for 64 charging points, of which 50 are installed and 14 more will be added soon. Each charger can power two buses within two hours, ensuring efficient operations.
Officials revealed that around 125,000 residents currently use the electric bus service daily, and the government aims to increase daily ridership to 250,000 passengers. Special focus will be given to expanding routes that benefit students and daily commuters.
