A severe Lahore load shedding crisis has intensified as declining electricity generation, fuel shortages, and reduced hydropower output disrupt supply across Punjab, exceeding official projections.
Power Generation Drop Behind Rising Load Shedding
Sources reveal that electricity production has declined due to limited generation from gas-powered plants, mainly caused by fuel shortages. This has significantly reduced overall supply, worsening the gap between electricity demand and availability.
At the same time, reduced hydropower generation has added pressure. According to the Power Division, hydropower output dropped by 1,991 megawatts during nighttime, contributing to a total shortfall of around 4,500 megawatts during peak hours.
Official Claims vs Ground Reality
Despite earlier claims by the Power Division that load shedding would be limited to 2 hours and 15 minutes, the situation in Lahore tells a different story.
Residents in multiple areas report one hour of electricity outage after every hour, severely impacting daily life, businesses, and essential services.

Rural Areas Face Longer Outages
The situation is even more critical in rural regions, where load shedding has exceeded 8 hours, exposing the disparity in electricity distribution and infrastructure limitations.
Hydropower and Water Supply Factors
Officials attribute the drop in hydropower generation to reduced water releases from dams, managed by the Indus River System Authority based on national demand levels.
Although overall electricity demand—around 18,000 megawatts during peak hours—is slightly lower than last year due to rainfall and harvesting season, supply shortages persist.
Daytime Relief Limited by Solar Contribution
During daylight hours, solar energy temporarily reduces electricity demand, allowing for relatively stable supply. However, this relief fades in the evening when demand rises and generation remains constrained.
Wider Impact and Public Concern
Electricity distribution companies have been forced to implement higher-than-planned load management, with some, including the Islamabad Electric Supply Company, announcing up to three hours of morning load shedding.
The Power Division has expressed regret over the increased outages, but public frustration continues to grow as unannounced and extended blackouts disrupt daily routines.
Experts warn that without immediate improvements in:
- Fuel supply
- Water resource management
- Power generation capacity
The crisis could deepen further, especially during peak summer demand.
