In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Punjab government has approved the purchase of electric bikes for excise department employees across the province. The move aims to enhance mobility, improve inspection efficiency, and modernize the department’s field operations.
According to officials, the government will procure 200 electric bikes, which will be distributed among excise inspectors in various districts, including Lahore, based on departmental requirements. Each bike is expected to cost approximately Rs. 250,000, with the total allocated budget reaching Rs. 50 million for the entire purchase.
Excise department representatives said the initiative will allow inspectors to cover more ground, especially in urban areas with heavy traffic, while also promoting environmentally friendly transportation. The bikes are expected to improve response times during inspections and increase overall operational efficiency.

The officials added that the procurement and distribution process is scheduled to be completed within the current financial year, ensuring that all designated inspectors receive their bikes promptly. This project is part of a broader effort by the provincial government to modernize departments, reduce dependency on traditional vehicles, and introduce sustainable alternatives in official operations.
The initiative has been welcomed by excise department employees, who see it as a practical step toward improving fieldwork capabilities while also reducing fuel costs. Authorities have assured that proper training and safety protocols will accompany the rollout of electric bikes to ensure their effective use across Punjab.
