LAHORE (Web Desk): A resolution has been submitted in the Punjab Assembly to reduce the legal driving age from 18 to 16.

Presented by opposition member Sheikh Imtiaz Mehmood, the resolution highlights that the youth population in Pakistan, especially in Punjab, is increasing rapidly. Reducing the driving age, it says, will help young people participate actively in the economy and national development.

According to the resolution, many countries allow young people to drive earlier. For example, in most provinces of Canada, the driving age is 16, while in Germany, it is 17.

The proposal urges that Pakistan should also follow this approach. By lowering the driving age to 16, the resolution argues, young citizens can contribute more effectively to the country’s growth and development.

Reducing the driving age could help young people gain independence and economic participation. It may also bring Pakistan in line with global practices. However, proper training and road safety measures are essential to avoid accidents.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has launched a new online system to make the renewal of international driving licenses easier and faster for citizens.

The service is now available through the official DLIMS portal, allowing applicants to complete the entire process without visiting licensing offices.

Residents inside Pakistan and overseas Pakistanis can submit their renewal requests by creating an online account, uploading required documents and tracking their applications digitally. The system has been designed to reduce overcrowding at traffic centers and provide services from any location.

The entire renewal facility is now accessible through the official Driving License Information Management System (DLIMS) portal. This means applicants no longer need to endure lengthy visits to licensing offices or traffic centers to complete their applications.

The system is particularly beneficial for Overseas Pakistanis, who can now easily manage their renewal requests from anywhere in the world.

Applicants can begin by creating an online account on the DLIMS portal. They can then upload all necessary documents, submit their renewal request, and digitally track the status of their application until its final approval.

By migrating the service online, the Punjab government seeks to drastically reduce overcrowding at physical traffic centers and licensing offices, improving efficiency for staff and in-person visitors.

Punjab traffic police said the digital renewal facility is part of a broader plan to modernize public services and make government processes more transparent and accessible for citizens.
