National Assembly Passes 27th Amendment Bill
(Web Desk): The National Assembly on Wednesday passed the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill with a two-thirds majority amid loud protests and a walkout by the opposition benches.

Out of the total members present, 234 voted in favour of the bill, while four opposed it. The session, presided over by Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, approved all 59 clauses of the amendment through a clause-by-clause voting process.

The final voting took place under the Division of House procedure, with separate lobbies marked for supporters and opponents. Following the passage, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated lawmakers on approving the significant legislation.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar presented the bill, which initially received 231 votes in favour. During the detailed voting, opposition members staged a walkout. Tarar also introduced eight additional clauses, all of which were approved.

Speaking after the session, the law minister said the amendment had removed ambiguity surrounding the office of the Chief Justice of Pakistan and was the result of extensive consultations with all parties.

He added that the joint parliamentary committee had thoroughly reviewed the draft before presenting it to Parliament and confirmed that Justice Yahya Afridi would serve as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan.

The session was attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also joined the proceedings, while senior PPP leader Khurshid Shah attended in a wheelchair due to illness.

With its passage in the National Assembly, the bill will now proceed to the Senate for approval.
