(Web Desk): Dense fog across Punjab has forced the Motorway Police to close several major motorway sections, disrupting traffic and prompting urgent travel advisories as visibility dropped to dangerously low levels in central and southern parts of the province.

According to Motorway Police Central Region spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed, multiple motorway sections were closed as a precautionary measure to protect lives and property amid hazardous driving conditions. The M-2 Motorway from Lahore to Kot Momin, M-3 from Faizpur to Rajana, M-4 from Pindi Bhattian to Multan, and M-5 from Multan to Rohri were shut due to dense fog. The Lahore–Sialkot Motorway (M-11) was also closed as visibility deteriorated sharply.

In addition to motorways, dense fog has severely affected several national highway routes. Areas reporting extremely poor visibility include Manga Mandi, Pattoki, Okara, and Sahiwal, along with Kassowal, Iqbal Nagar, Chichawatni, and Mian Channu. Heavy fog was also recorded in Khanewal, Multan, Basti Malook, Lodhran, Bahawalpur, Ahmedpur East, Rahim Yar Khan, and Sadiqabad, where visibility dropped to between zero and 100 metres at various points.

Motorway Police warned that traveling during foggy conditions significantly increases the risk of serious and fatal accidents, particularly due to speeding and lane violations. Authorities urged commuters to avoid unnecessary travel, especially during late-night and early-morning hours when fog intensity is at its peak.

Officials noted that visibility generally improves between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, making daytime travel comparatively safer. Drivers who must travel have been advised to strictly follow lane discipline, use fog lights, reduce speed, and maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead. Motorists were also encouraged to use alternative routes such as the GT Road where possible.

The Motorway Police said they are closely monitoring weather conditions and will issue updates as visibility changes. Citizens have been advised to stay informed through official advisories and contact the Motorway Police helpline at 130 for real-time road updates, guidance, or emergency assistance.
