SpaceX owner Elon Musk had commented on the availability of Starlink in the country.
The members of committee alleged that Musk orchestrated a false narrative by siding with India against Pakistan.
A senator urged Elon Musk to issue a public apology. The Secretary of IT stated that Musk s controversial comments were misleading and clarified that there has been no direct communication between the two sides regarding the introduction of Starlink in Pakistan.
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Major General (retired) Hafeezur Rehman stated that Starlink Internet cannot receive a license until the government grants security clearance.
He told the committee members that when Starlink follows the government policies, it will get permission to operate in Pakistan, adding that the company has expressed commitment to not bypass Pakistan’s internet system.
He mentioned that a dedicated Space Regulatory Authority has been established to oversee satellite internet and other low Earth orbit (LEO) services.
The Standing Committee has requested a detailed briefing from the Space Regulatory Authority in the next meeting to address issues related to Starlink s licensing and other space policy matters.
