ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) Pakistani government has deported British journalist Charles Glass after he attempted to visit incarcerated former premier Imran Khan along with his sister.

Glass has recently called for the release of both WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and PTI founder Imran Khan in an article.

Last week, Charles Glass arrived in Islamabad and sought permission from the Pakistani authorities to visit the former prime minister. However, the government declined his request, as per media reports.

Interior Ministry sources said that the British journalist was detained by police at a residence and afterwards, he was escorted to Islamabad airport for deportation. The Interior Ministry did not respond to Anadolu Ajansı’s request for comment on the issue.

The Khaama Press adds: Glass had attempted to see Imran Khan in Adiala Prison with Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan.

Pakistani police raided the residence of the British-American journalist in Islamabad and informed him that his visa had been cancelled and that he needed to leave the country within a few hours.

The police escorted him from the residence of a Pakistani journalist to his hotel and then to the airport, from where he was deported to the United Arab Emirates.

Dawn reported that Charles Glass had attempted to visit Imran Khan at Adiala Prison a few days ago with Aleema Khan but was denied access.

Additionally, Geo News reported that Glass had also requested permission from Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, to meet with Khan, but his request was denied.

In an article published in May in connection with World Press Freedom Day, Glass called for the release of Julian Assange and Khan. He argued that they were imprisoned for challenging US interests. His deportation comes a day after Khan, currently imprisoned in Rawalpindi, offered conditions for negotiations with Pakistan s military to resolve the political crisis that has unfolded since his ouster in April 2022.

The PTI accused the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) of election rigging and "stealing" its mandate but the ECP has denied the allegations.
