LAHORE (Web Desk): Punjab government has planned 2,000 EV charging stations, 600 electric buses to modernize public transport and fight pollution across the province.

In a major step toward eco-friendly transport, the Punjab government has decided to set up 2,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across various districts. The aim is to reduce air pollution and move towards sustainable urban mobility.

In the first phase of this project, around 600 electric buses will be launched to replace traditional fuel-based transport. This key decision was taken during a high-level meeting led by Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman, held via video link at the Civil Secretariat.

To ensure smooth implementation, the chief secretary instructed all deputy commissioners to identify suitable locations in their districts for the EV charging stations and bus depots. These sites must meet future urban transport needs and support a green transformation.

The chief secretary stressed that this initiative aims to provide citizens with safe, comfortable, and modern public transport in line with global standards. He also highlighted the need to act against overloading in public vehicles, which often compromises commuter safety.

Apart from the transport agenda, the meeting also covered broader governance issues. The chief secretary urged swift computerization of land records and launched a strict call to eliminate corruption in the revenue department. Both were termed essential for transparent and citizen-friendly administration.

On public health, Zaman ordered urgent action against stray dog bite incidents, which remain a serious risk in several areas. He directed local administrations to treat this as a priority to ensure community well-being.

The meeting was attended by key officials, including secretaries of the health and transport departments, the CEO of Lahore Waste Management Company, and others. Divisional and deputy commissioners joined online, signaling strong coordination across districts.

This is one of Punjab’s most ambitious moves toward green infrastructure and public sector reform. Electric buses and charging stations will not only help reduce pollution but also cut long-term transportation costs. The simultaneous push for digitization, anti-corruption, and health safety reflects a multi-dimensional governance approach.

However, the success of this project depends heavily on swift execution, proper site selection, and continued maintenance. Public awareness and acceptance of EVs will also play a vital role in its impact.
