(Web Desk): The Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute of Trauma (SMBBIT) stands as Pakistan’s first Level 1 public-sector trauma center, treating over 500 patients daily.

There are facilities for even those arriving from distant provinces like Sindh and Balochistan. SMBBIT features a 500-bed capacity, including a 97-bed Emergency Department, two ICU/HDU units, and 18 fully equipped operating theaters. Among its proven innovations is the first public-sector pharmacy based on modern dilutional principles.

Advanced departments include Orthopaedic Trauma, Neurosurgery, Thoracic, Oral and Maxillofacial, and Plastic Surgery, as well as Vascular & Endovascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology, many services unavailable in other public hospitals of Sindh.

In mid-2025, rumors widely circulated online claiming that the elevators at SMBB Trauma Centre were out of order, causing panic among patient circles. SMBBIT swiftly issued an official denial, clarifying that all lifts (including separate ones for patients and attendants) are fully operational, routinely inspected, and safe.

Meanwhile, lift incidents in Karachi public hospitals, such as the February 2025 Abbasi Shaheed Hospital scare, where the mayor was briefly trapped after a sudden descent, helped fuel the narrative, although no such incident occurred at SMBBIT.

Despite basement misinformation, SMBB Trauma Centre’s emergency-care infrastructure and clinical capacity remain undisputed. Its broad suite of free, advanced treatments and commitment to rapid patient turnover continue to play a vital role in Karachi’s trauma response.

Meanwhile, the swift institutional denial highlighted the importance of proactive communication amid virally spreading claims.
