The SRT system is a futuristic, trackless metro dubbed a “subway on the road.” This cutting-edge transport technology was introduced in the city this month, marking a major milestone in Pakistan’s exploration of smart, sustainable urban mobility solutions.
The SRT will not use traditional railway tracks; hence, a Visual Track Technology will be. The Virtual Track Technology is a digital guidance system that allows the metro to follow a designated path on regular roads. There is no need for expensive rail infrastructure for this innovation, and it will offer the benefits of a high-capacity transit system. The concept, already active in China, Malaysia, the UAE, and Türkiye, could become a cost-effective answer to Pakistan s growing urban traffic woes.

First launched in Jiangsu Province, China in 2021, the SRT system has received international recognition, including the prestigious Zhan Tianyou Award from the China Civil Engineering Society for innovation in transport design.
The vehicle is currently undergoing trial phase in Lahore. This being done to assess its compatibility with local road conditions and public transport needs. Whether or not the system will adopted permanently is not yet confirmed by the officials; however, the demonstration is seen as a positive step towards adopting and embracing cleaner, smarter mass transit.
If approved, the trackless metro could revolutionize public transport in Lahore and beyond. Will be revolutionized if trackless metros are adapted; this will not only offer an environmentally friendly option but also come with an infrastructure-light solution, especially in a traffic-congested country such as Lahore where urban sprawl are increasingly current issues.
