Karachi unveils monsoon traffic diversion plan to counter flood risks
KARACHI (Web Desk): Karachi Traffic Police have announced a detailed traffic diversion plan as the city braces for heavy monsoon downpours and the risk of urban flooding.

Authorities have designated key alternate routes to ensure mobility and minimize disruption for commuters as rains are expected to inundate major arteries.

As part of the preparations, Tariq Road has been declared a No-Parking Zone on both sides. This critical corridor will serve as an emergency bypass if Sharae Faisal becomes submerged, and residents as well as traders have been urged to comply strictly.

In District Central, areas between Power House Chowrangi and Nagan Chowrangi are notorious for severe waterlogging. Motorists traveling from Rashid Minhas Road are advised to make a U-turn at Godhra, proceed via Shafiq Mor, and continue towards New Karachi to ease congestion. Similarly, to reach 4K Chowrangi, traffic from Sakhi Hassan Chowrangi should divert through Qalandaria Chowk and Anda Mor, while vehicles near Board Office will be rerouted via KDA Chowrangi toward Shahrah-e-Noor Jehan.

Commuters headed for North Nazimabad Blocks N, H, and I are recommended to use the route from Imtiaz Supermarket through Mujahid Colony, Ziauddin Hospital, Saifee College, Landhi Kotal, Peoples Chowrangi, and merge at Shafiq Mor en route to New Karachi.

Traffic police also warned that low-lying locations — Nursery, Lal Kothi, Baloch Colony, Karsaz, Drigh Road underpass, Kala Pul, and Madam Cut — are highly vulnerable. In adverse conditions, alternate corridors like Shahrah-e-Faisal, Sindhi Muslim Society, Allah Wali Chowrangi, Char Minar, PTV Station, Aga Khan Road, Stadium Road, Millennium Mall, Johar Chowrangi, Rabia City, Habib University, Pehlwan Goth, and Airport routes should be used.

For those traveling between Defence and Jinnah International Airport, alternative routes include Qayyumabad–Shahrah-e-Bhutto–Shah Faisal Colony–Shama Shopping Mall–Star Gate. Return trips should avoid Madam Apartments and instead follow the internal road from the old terminal via Star Gate, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Colony Gate, Shama Shopping Centre, and thereafter Shahrah-e-Bhutto–Qayyumabad into Defence.

Commuters bound for Garden or Tower are encouraged to use the Model Colony graveyard route to Jinnah Avenue, then Super Highway and Lyari Expressway. Those heading to Gulshan-e-Iqbal or Gulistan-e-Jauhar can reach Jinnah Avenue via Race Course.

This robust traffic diversion plan aims to mitigate gridlock and protect commuter safety amid anticipated heavy rains, emphasized city officials. Citizens are strongly urged to follow alternative routes and heed traffic police directions to avoid delays and hazards.
