In 2025, the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports (DGIP) has simplified the process for passport applicants to track their status. Whether you applied for a new passport or a renewal, you can now monitor the progress using SMS or the online token tracking portal, saving you time and uncertainty.
According to DGIP’s official process, once you submit your passport application, you will receive an 11‑digit token number. This token is your key to accessing status updates.
Track via SMS (Code 9988)
One of the fastest, no-internet-required methods is through SMS:
1. Open the messaging app on your registered mobile number.
2. Type your 11-digit token number.
3. Send it to 9988.
4. Within seconds, you’ll receive an automated status update.
Typical responses might include: “Your passport is under printing,” or “Your passport is ready for collection from Lahore office.”
This SMS service was reintroduced to ease public access and reduce unnecessary visits to passport offices.
Track online via token & CNIC
For those with internet access, the DGIP tracking portal offers more detail:
1. Visit the official DGIP passport tracking site.
2. Enter your token number and CNIC number.
3. Click “Track Passport” to view your application status — e.g. In Process, Dispatched, Ready for Collection, or Delayed/Rejected.
This method is ideal when you want deeper insight into where your application stands.
4. Processing times to know
DGIP’s standard processing times remain in place, depending on the service category:
- Normal: 10–15 working days
- Urgent: 4–7 working days
- Fast Track: 2–3 working days
Common issues & tips
- Wrong token or CNIC: Ensure you enter accurate numbers.
- SMS not delivered or status missing: Use the online method or wait a few hours.
- Delayed collection after “Ready” message: The passport may still need courier movement to your regional office.

To avoid frustration, always keep your token receipt safe and double-check your details before sending. Users have also reported delays or missing updates, which sometimes require contacting DGIP directly.
