(Web Desk): The Government of Pakistan has officially approved a new scheme under which electric bikes will be provided to citizens with subsidies.

According to details, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet approved the summary presented by the Ministry of Industries and Production on Tuesday for the implementation of a subsidy scheme aimed at promoting electric bikes and rickshaws. The ECC meeting was chaired by Federal Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, where this approval was granted.

It is noteworthy that a budget of 9 billion rupees has already been allocated for the financial year 2025–26 to fund this project. The scheme also includes the provision of free electric bikes to high-performing students of public colleges.

It should be noted that under the approved plan, a total of 116,000 electric bikes and 3,170 electric rickshaws/loaders will be introduced in two phases. In the initial phase, which is expected to be inaugurated soon by the Prime Minister, 40,000 electric bikes and 1,000 electric rickshaws/loaders will be provided.

The initiative aims to cut fuel dependency, combat climate change, and provide budget-friendly commuting options for the masses — particularly students, low-income workers, and delivery riders.
