(Web Desk): For the first time electric bike scheme has launched for the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) staff, a step toward eco-friendly urban governance.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has launched e-bike program for the employees of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC). The initiative is aimed at reducing fuel expenses, minimizing carbon emissions and building a greener Karachi through contemporary mobility solutions.

During the first phase, KMC has procured 20 electric bicycles at a subsidized price of Rs. 215,000 per bike, down from the market price of Rs. 240,000. Initially, these will be provided to dispatch riders, while in the second phase, women employees will be given preference to promote inclusivity in the workforce.

For a seamless transition, the first charging station in Karachi city has been installed at the KMC headquarters. Future plans include installing more charging stations throughout Karachi to ensure hassle-free functioning for everybody. Further, all the stations will be monitored and tracked with the help of a special mobile app, which will ensure transparency and optimum usage of energy.

Mayor Wahab pointed out that this is not merely a decision about replacing petrol bikes but about embracing a holistic strategy for a green Karachi. By minimizing the dependence on fossil-fuel-based transport, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation will save on operational costs while doing its share in addressing climate change.

"This is not about electric bikes alone; it s about having a healthier, cleaner and greener Karachi," Mayor Wahab stated.

He also emphasized the other green initiatives including a solar park at Kidney Hill, the conversion of Malir s pumping stations to solar energy and a plan to shift five of KMC s 14 hospitals to renewable energy.
