LAHORE (Web Desk): Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri objected to the Islamabad High Court chief justice’s inclusion in a bench hearing a case linked to his degree.

During the hearing, Justice Jahangiri directly addressed IHC Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar, saying that his presence on the bench created a conflict of interest. He stated, “You are also a judge, I am also a judge, I filed a petition against you. This is a conflict of interest, and you cannot sit in a case against me.”

The remarks came during proceedings on a petition filed by Advocate Mian Dawood, which seeks verification of Justice Jahangiri’s forged degree case. The case revolves around a decision by the University of Karachi (UoK), which cancelled the degree after its syndicate upheld recommendations of the ‘Unfair Means Committee’.

Justice Jahangiri expressed strong distrust in the current bench and asked that the case be assigned to another bench. He firmly defended his degree, saying he swears by its authenticity and stressed that the university never declared it fake or unissued.

He also complained about receiving the court notice late and without a copy of the petition. Calling the matter 34 years old, he requested time to review the documents and arrange legal representation.

Questioning the procedure, Justice Jahangiri said a ‘quo warranto writ’ is usually heard by a single bench, not a division bench. He further objected to being stopped from judicial work, saying such an action had no precedent in judicial history.

In response, the court summoned the University of Karachi registrar with the complete record and directed that all relevant documents be provided to Justice Jahangiri. The petitioner, meanwhile, requested daily hearings, arguing the case had already taken too long.

IHC Chief Justice Dogar assured Justice Jahangiri that he would receive justice like any other citizen. The court later adjourned the hearing till Thursday, December 18.
