(Web Desk): Pakistan may set age limit for social media use as a petition in Lahore High Court (LHC) seeks a ban on children under 16.

A major development has emerged in Pakistan regarding the use of social media by minors. A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court asking for a complete ban on social media use for children below the age of 16.

The petition argues that excessive and uncontrolled use of social media is seriously harming children’s mental health, moral values, and educational development. It warns that young users are being exposed to harmful influences at a very early age.

The case has been filed by an eighth-grade student, Alia Saleem, through her lawyer Sheeza. The federal government, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, and other relevant institutions have been made respondents in the case.

According to the petitioner, unrestricted access to social media pushes children toward psychological problems, inappropriate content, and unhealthy online behavior. These factors, the petition says, can negatively shape a child’s personality and future.

The plea further states that protecting children’s basic rights is a constitutional duty of the state. It urges the court to direct authorities to regulate social media use for minors, following examples from other countries where age limits and controls are already in place.

This petition reflects rising concern among families and educators. Courts may now play a key role in shaping digital rules for children. Any decision could affect millions of young users across Pakistan.
