A three-member bench, led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, heard the appeals regarding the cancellation of bail for the May 9 suspects. Senior lawyer Zulfiqar Naqvi represented the Punjab government in the apex court.
Naqvi requested the court to grant more time for preparation. Chief Justice Yahya Afridi remarked that the cases for May 9 are scheduled for tomorrow and the day after. In previous hearings, the additional prosecutor had requested time, and now you are asking for time as well.
Naqvi requested the court to postpone the cases for this week, pledging to come prepared for next week’s cases. Chief Justice Yahya Afridi said that some appeals are related to case transfers, but the matter of case transfers has already been resolved, so you should take instructions from the government.
Zulfiqar Naqvi replied that the judge’s transfer has already taken place, and he will follow the appeal only in terms of fines and some observations.
The court stated that the request from the Punjab government for more time has been granted, and hearings for all cases will be held after Eid.
It is worth noting that the Lahore High Court had approved the bails for the May 9 suspects. The Punjab government has approached the Supreme Court to have the bails canceled.
