The TechGirls Exchange Program 2026, a flagship initiative of the U.S. Department of State, has opened applications for a fully funded international exchange aimed at empowering the next generation of female leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Designed for girls aged 15 to 17, the TechGirls program provides a rare opportunity to gain hands-on STEM experience, leadership training, cultural exchange, and long-term mentorship—all with no financial cost to participants. The program covers air tickets, visa fees, accommodation, meals, transportation, and health insurance, making it one of the most sought-after fully funded student exchange programs globally.
What Is the TechGirls Exchange Program 2026?
The TechGirls Exchange Program is an international summer exchange initiative that brings together young women from the United States and 37 eligible countries. Since its launch in 2012, the program has supported over 900 girls worldwide, fostering global collaboration and innovation in STEM fields.
In 2026, the program will select 111 international participants, joined by 13 U.S. peers, for a seven-month experience, including a 23-day immersive stay in the United States. Participants will engage in interactive technology camps, STEM career exploration, leadership workshops, and cultural exchange activities.
Program Structure and Experience
Participants begin with preparatory mentorship in their home countries, followed by:
- Hands-on STEM and technology camps
- Community immersion and cultural exchange
- STEM career exploration with industry exposure
- Leadership development and problem-solving training
Accommodation will be provided in double-occupancy dormitories at Virginia Tech and hotels in Washington, D.C., with all activities fully supervised by trained staff.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be 15–17 years old at the start of the program
- Be citizens of an eligible country
- Demonstrate strong interest and aptitude in STEM subjects
- Have advanced-intermediate to strong English proficiency
- Show maturity, adaptability, and an open-minded attitude
- Commit to completing at least one additional semester of secondary school after returning home
- Be willing to carry out a community service project post-program
- Preferably have no prior U.S. travel experience in the last three years
