Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved a new promotion framework for Punjab traffic wardens, allowing them to move up to Grade-16 Senior Traffic Wardens and Grade-17 Traffic Officers.
The decision marks a major step toward structured career growth for traffic police personnel. Officials say the move will improve morale, reward performance, and strengthen traffic management across the province.
According to a Punjab Police spokesperson, the new promotion system blends seniority with merit. Under the approved structure, 50 percent of promotions will be granted on the basis of seniority. The remaining 50 percent will be awarded through competitive examinations conducted by the Punjab Public Service Commission.
Inspector General of Police Punjab, Dr. Usman Anwar, said the policy ensures transparency and fairness in promotions. He added that traffic wardens will now have a clearly defined career path, which was missing in the past.
Dr. Usman Anwar said that exams for promotion to Senior Traffic Warden and Traffic Officer ranks will be conducted soon. He stressed that merit-based testing will help select capable officers for leadership roles within the traffic police.
Police officials believe the reform will encourage wardens to improve professional skills and discipline. They say better career prospects will also help retain trained staff and reduce frustration among lower ranks.
