
Millions of people in Karachi are forced to experience a daily struggle with the lack of good public transport. The city needs almost 15,000 buses but has only a few thousand old and unmaintained vehicles running. This chronic crisis has rendered transportation one of the largest urban issues in the city.
The Yellow Line BRT, launched in 2022, is an integral part of the Karachi Master Transport Plan. The 21-kilometer-long corridor will travel from Dawood Chowrangi to Khalid bin Waleed Road, with 36 state-of-the-art stations. Upon opening, the system will transport approximately 300,000 passengers per day.
The project, costing approximately US$428 million, has been designed to offer safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly travel options. Importantly, the Yellow Line fleet will include electric buses, aimed at reducing Karachi’s rising air pollution levels while setting a new standard for modern public transport.

This initiative will be Karachi’s third major BRT system after the Green Line and Red Line projects. Officials say it will significantly cut travel times, ease congestion, and reduce dependence on costly, unregulated transport services.
Both the World Bank and the Sindh government have been instrumental in financing and supporting the Yellow Line BRT, making it one of the city’s most ambitious infrastructure projects in recent years.
