In a unique initiative supported by the local business community, this program is part of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s vision, aimed at providing secure and convenient transportation facilities to women educators.
Applications for free e-bikes were invited earlier this month, and more than 650 teachers have already applied. The last date for submission was August 10.
Eligibility conditions include an upper age limit of 35 years. Both permanent and contract-based teachers were allowed to apply. However, widows, divorced women, and women who are the sole breadwinners of their families were given special priority.
To ensure transparency, the bikes will be distributed through a computerized lucky draw.
Earlier, during Independence Day celebrations, the district administration in collaboration with philanthropists had already handed over e-bikes to 14 women teachers. Officials believe that the scheme will not only solve mobility problems for female teachers but also promote the use of clean energy vehicles, which will help in reducing environmental pollution.

This project reflects a significant social and environmental step in Punjab’s education and mobility sector. By empowering women teachers with free e-bikes, the government and local community are addressing two issues at once: women’s safety and ease of travel, and the larger global challenge of climate change.
The priority given to widows, divorced women, and single earners highlights a compassionate approach, ensuring that those in the toughest situations receive immediate support. Moreover, introducing electric bikes at a local level paves the way for greener cities and sets an example for other districts to follow.
The computerized draw system ensures fairness, preventing favoritism or political influence. If successful, this initiative could inspire similar projects across Pakistan, helping women gain independence while promoting eco-friendly transport solutions.
