KARACHI (Web Desk): Open manholes have claimed another child’s life in Karachi, once again exposing deadly negligence on the city’s streets.

Police said an 8-year-old boy fell into an uncovered manhole in Korangi’s Mehran Town Industrial Area and died on the spot.

The deceased child was identified as Dilbar Ali. His body was shifted to Jinnah Hospital for legal formalities.

Eyewitnesses said children were playing in the street when Dilbar Ali suddenly fell into the open manhole and lost his life instantly.

Sources said no assistant commissioner, deputy commissioner, or relevant civic officials arrived at the scene. Only police and Chhipa volunteers were present.

Police said legal action and further investigation are underway. SSP Korangi Fida Hussain Janwari visited the site and reviewed the situation.

Meanwhile, Karachi Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad took notice of the tragic incident and sought a report, warning that those responsible would face strict action.

This is the 27th death caused by open manholes and drains in Karachi, and the third such incident reported in Korangi alone.

Earlier, on November 30, another child died after falling into an uncovered manhole near the NIPA Bridge in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

Witnesses said the family had just stepped out of a department store when the child ran toward the road and fell into a lidless sewer. The body was recovered after 15 hours.

Open manholes remain a deadly threat. Authorities act only after tragedies. Children continue to pay the price. Fixing streets can save lives.
