People should include outdoor activities and social time as key elements of a fulfilling day
(Web Desk): A new study has shed light on what makes a “good day,” suggesting that a balance of socialising, work, and physical activity may significantly improve overall wellbeing.

Researchers analyzing data from the American Time Use Survey found that people were more likely to report a better-than-average day when they spent between 30 minutes to two hours socialising, up to six hours working, and as much as four hours engaging in exercise or recreational activities. Spending around five to six hours with family and friends was also linked to higher satisfaction.

Interestingly, the study found that passive activities such as watching television or doing housework did not contribute to a better day. However, researchers caution that these findings do not establish a strict formula for happiness, as personal choice and individual circumstances play a major role.

To test these insights, individuals attempted to structure their day around the suggested “balance.” Their experiences revealed that incorporating even small amounts of exercise and social interaction could noticeably boost mood and energy levels.

Participants reported that physical activity, even something as simple as walking, provided an immediate sense of wellbeing. Socialising, whether planned or spontaneous, also emerged as a key factor in enhancing happiness, helping individuals feel more connected and emotionally fulfilled.

However, maintaining this balance consistently proved challenging, especially for those with demanding schedules or caregiving responsibilities. Experts note that while the “ideal day” may not be achievable every day, being mindful of how time is spent can lead to gradual improvements in quality of life.

The study ultimately suggests that prioritising active leisure, meaningful social interactions, and manageable work hours can help individuals create more fulfilling daily experiences.
