During a Ramadan transmission on a private channel, an Islamic scholar was asked about the rising trend of celebrities altering the spelling of their Islamic names.

The discussion gained attention after an example linked to Mawra Hocane name debate was raised by the host.

The scholar warned that deliberately changing Islamic names for style or branding is not allowed. Referring to the Mawra Hocane name spelling, he said such changes remove the original meaning and religious identity attached to a name.

He explained that names given by parents carry rights and respect in Islam. Mispronouncing or altering them without reason is considered unjust. The Mufti stressed this point while continuing the Mawra Hocane name debate, which quickly spread on social media.

To support his view, he shared an incident involving Ali ibn Abi Talib, who once corrected a mispronounced name, saying correct pronunciation is a person’s right.

The scholar added that Muslims are advised to be careful even while choosing names. Some avoid certain names due to the responsibility attached to them, making unnecessary changes even more questionable under Islamic teachings.
