Vegetable prices have surged sharply across Lahore, placing additional financial strain on consumers already dealing with inflation. Tomatoes have reached as high as Rs. 200 per kilogram in local markets, making them one of the most expensive staple vegetables in recent weeks.
According to market sources, other vegetables have also seen notable price increases. Garlic, officially priced at Rs. 550 per kg, is being sold at around Rs. 600 in the open market. Similarly, ginger has climbed to Rs. 350 per kg, exceeding its official rate of Rs. 285.
Onions are also being sold above government rates, with prices ranging between Rs. 70 and Rs. 75 per kg against the official price of Rs. 62. Meanwhile, green chillies have witnessed a sharp spike, reaching Rs. 180 per kg compared to the official rate of Rs. 105.

Traders attribute the price surge to supply disruptions and rising transportation costs. Recent heavy rains in southern regions such as Badin have damaged crops, particularly tomatoes, affecting supply nationwide. In some cities, tomato prices have previously touched Rs. 500 per kg due to shortages.
Consumers have expressed frustration over the rising cost of basic food items, urging authorities to take action to control prices. Vendors, however, argue that higher fuel costs and logistical challenges are forcing them to sell at increased rates.
