Speaking to the media after the completion of the privatisation process, Arif Habib said, “PIA has seen good days, today Pakistan has won, and investment in the country will rise.”
Currently, PIA’s fleet consists of 18 to 19 aircraft, with 13 to 14 operational. Arif Habib revealed that in the first phase, the number of planes will be increased to 38 and then to 65, with future additions based on demand.
He also assured that airline employees would be supported, and their experience fully utilised. Expanding PIA will create new job opportunities and strengthen the airline.
Sources confirmed that the privatisation process is complete, and the Arif Habib consortium will assume management control by April 2026. Within three months, the transfer to the new administration will be finalised.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the nation on PIA’s privatisation, saying it fulfils the government’s promise to privatise state institutions. He added that privatisation will strengthen the economy and restore investor confidence.

Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif praised the efforts of Ishaq Dar, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and other officials, highlighting the government’s commitment to development and public welfare through collaboration with the private sector.
Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said PIA’s privatisation will attract foreign investment. He stressed that the government wants all institutions to stand on their own and welcomed the participation of domestic investors. He also noted that the mining sector has attractive investment opportunities.
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said in a message, “PIA’s privatisation was transparent, today Pakistan has won. Congratulations to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the chairman of the Privatisation Commission, and the entire team.”
Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said PIA’s sale for Rs135bn reflects growing confidence in the economy. He added that privatisation will save billions in losses from government-controlled businesses and accelerate economic recovery.
He further said, “Privatisation is a welcome step. Today’s transaction signals future successes and strengthens Pakistan’s economic foundations.”
