Pakistan releases first digital economic census results
(Web Desk): The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has announced the results of the country’s first-ever Digital Economic Census 2023, revealing detailed insights into the economic units and workforce distribution nationwide.

According to the report, Pakistan houses over 7.1 million economic units. The total number of employed individuals in the country stands at 25,344,412. Approximately one-third of households are engaged in economic activities.

Among the economic units:

  • Retail shops number 2,779,899
  • Wholesale shops total 188,843
  • Service-providing shops count 825,254
  • Hotels are 256,926, with 16,565 hostels
  • Hospitals tally 119,789
  • Schools number 242,616, colleges 11,568, and universities 214
  • Mosques total 640,300, with 19,645 bank branches nationwide

The report highlights that 57.86% of the economic institutions belong to the service sector, while 24.80% are in production, 14.15% in social sectors, and the remaining 3.09% in other economic units.

Further findings include:

  • About 28.5% of households engage in activities such as animal husbandry, sewing, beauty parlors, tuition centers, and more.
  • There are 23,119 factories, 29,836 government offices, and 10,452 semi-government offices.
  • The country has 5,773 post offices and 643,000 production units in shops.
  • Wholesale, retail, vehicle, and motorcycle repair workshops form the largest sector with 3.2 million units.
  • The agricultural sector ranks second with 1.1 million units related to forestry, fishing, and others.
  • Private sector accounts for 99,000 schools, 6,900 colleges, and 91 universities.
  • The country has 36,315 madrasas.
  • 13,800 government and 105,900 private facilities are included in Hospitals.

Workforce distribution by province shows:

  • Punjab: 13,640,000
  • Sindh: 5,713,000
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 3,980,000
  • Balochistan: 1,380,000
  • Islamabad Capital Territory: 621,000

Economic participations of house households was reported to be 5.6 million, with 51.35% involved in livestock farming. Additionally, in sewing 3.85% are engaged, 1.36% in embroidery, 1.32% in poultry farming, and 0.56% operate tuition centers.
