New Zealand has unveiled a major new immigration initiative aimed at drawing international investors and strengthening the country’s economy. The government has officially launched the Business Investor Work Visa, widely being referred to as New Zealand’s new Golden Visa, providing a structured pathway to residency through investment.
According to international media outlets, the new program offers foreign investors the opportunity to obtain residence, and eventually permanent residency, by committing substantial financial investment into New Zealand’s economy. The launch signals Wellington’s renewed push to position itself as an attractive destination for high-net-worth individuals seeking long-term opportunities.
Two Investment Pathways Announced
Officials confirmed that the scheme includes two investment tracks:
- NZD 1 million investment:
Qualifies applicants for a three-year work-to-residency pathway. - NZD 2 million investment:
Allows investors to access a fast-track, one-year route to residency, significantly shortening the wait time.
The visa requires applicants to maintain minimum personal assets of NZD 500,000 to support themselves and their families. Investors must also demonstrate relevant business experience, such as having operated a company employing at least five full-time staff or managing annual business revenue of NZD 1 million.
Family Inclusion & Restrictions
The government has confirmed that investors will be permitted to include their spouse and dependent children in the visa application.
However, authorities have prohibited investments in certain sectors, including:
- Gambling businesses
- Fast-food chains
- Tobacco-related industries
These exclusions are intended to ensure investment flows into sectors aligned with New Zealand’s long-term economic and social priorities.
Will Operate Alongside Active Investor Plus Visa
The Golden Visa initiative will run parallel to the existing Active Investor Plus Visa, which requires far greater investment, between NZD 5 million and NZD 10 million, depending on the investment category.
Officials described the new Business Investor Work Visa as a more accessible option for mid-tier global investors seeking residency pathways.
Applications Open Next Year
New Zealand’s immigration authorities have confirmed that applications for the new Golden Visa will officially open on 24 November 2025.
