(Web Desk): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to China for the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Heads of State Council summit, which begins Saturday in Tianjin.

In a post on X, Modi confirmed his participation in the SCO summit. He also reaffirmed that India will continue to play “an active and constructive role” within the SCO, working alongside member nations to tackle common security and economic challenges.

Modi’s bilateral meetings with Xi and Putin carry particular significance at a time when India’s relations with China remain tense due to unresolved border disputes. Contrary to this India’s ties with Russia remain strong, especially in the fields of energy and defense, despite ongoing Western pressure over the war in Ukraine.

China will host more than 20 world leaders at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, beginning Sunday (Aug 31). The two-day gathering, held in the northeastern port city of Tianjin, will mark the forum’s largest meeting to date, taking place against a backdrop of intensifying geopolitical and trade tensions.

The summit will bring together a high-profile guest list, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as leaders from the Middle East, Central Asia, and South Asia. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn are also scheduled to attend.

One of the most notable aspects of this year’s summit is the expanded participation of ASEAN. Leaders from five member states are expected, among them Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.
