Dubai’s ruler, known for his visionary leadership and deep ties to the city’s metro development, recently laid the foundation stone for the network’s first station — named Emaar Properties.
As with past milestones, the groundbreaking is symbolically scheduled for September 9, 2029, aligning with the city’s recurring affinity for the number nine.
A Visionary Design by Global Icons
The station, standing at 74 metres (242 feet) and spread across three levels, is designed by the world-renowned architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) — the same masterminds behind the Burj Khalifa, New York’s Olympic Tower, and Chicago’s Sears Tower.
Unveiled earlier in October 2024, the current station design departs significantly from earlier concepts. Instead of an oval-shaped, enclosed model, the final structure features soaring vertical walls, a prominent terminal arch, and a striking blend of tradition and modernity.
Architecture as a Portal to the Future
Visually, the station resembles a gateway to the future, with towering walls and warm, natural tones. Its ceilings are fitted with glass panels that flood the interior with sunlight. Platforms appear to emerge organically from the structure’s walls, while a pedestrian bridge ensures seamless commuter access.

Material choices reflect Dubai’s hallmark aesthetic — Jura limestone bronze metal panels line the walls, with granite floor tiles grounding the space in elegance and durability. A blend of natural stone and metal anchors the station in local heritage, while embracing modernity.
Built for the Future
Beyond aesthetics, the station is designed to be a mini urban hub, offering electric vehicle charging stations, drop-off zones, parking facilities, and surrounding green spaces. By 2040, it s expected to serve 160,000 passengers daily, reflecting Dubai’s relentless march toward a smarter, greener, and more connected future.
