Snow and heavy rain kill 61 across Afghanistan in three days

Kabul (Web Desk): Disaster officials said the deaths were reported between Wednesday and Friday, mainly in central and northern parts of the country, 61 people were killed in just three days.

According to officials, the “initial figures of casualties and destruction” show that 110 people were injured. At least 458 houses were either partially or completely destroyed during the severe weather.

Authorities said around 360 families were affected by the snowfall and heavy rain. A disaster management spokesman urged people to avoid unnecessary travel, especially on snow-covered roads.

The spokesman said most deaths were caused by roof collapses and avalanches. Several people also lost their lives due to frostbite as temperatures dropped below zero.

In the southern province of Kandahar, emergency officials confirmed that six children died when the roof of their home collapsed during strong winds and heavy rain on Wednesday.

Homes were also damaged in other districts as harsh winter conditions continued to batter different regions of the country.
