SURREY (Web Desk): The Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) and the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Temple have inaugurated an ‘Embassy of Khalistan’ in Surrey, British Columbia, complete with a ‘Republic of Khalistan’ sign.

The embassy is situated inside the gurdwara premises, drawing attention not just from the Sikh community but also from political observers who see it as a potential flashpoint in Indo-Canadian relations.

Reports suggest the provincial government of British Columbia contributed financially to the building’s infrastructure, including a recent allocation of $150,000 for installing an elevator.

This inauguration comes at a sensitive time, as India and Canada are seeking to repair and strengthen their diplomatic ties. The development is likely to be closely watched in both Ottawa and New Delhi, given the history of Khalistan-related controversies.

The opening of a symbolic Khalistan ‘Embassy’ in Canada could become a significant point of contention between India and Canada, especially at a time when both nations are trying to mend strained ties. While for some in the Sikh community it represents cultural and political expression, for India it may be seen as a provocative act that challenges its sovereignty, potentially reigniting diplomatic friction.
