(Web Desk): Migrant boat sinks off Turkiye’s Aegean coast, killing at least 18 people as rescue teams continue search operations.

At least 18 people have lost their lives after an inflatable boat carrying migrants sank off the western coast of Turkiye in the Mugla province. Rescue teams are still searching the area for any survivors.

According to the coastguard, the boat was detected near the Bodrum district at around 0300 GMT. Officials said the vessel tried to move away despite repeated warnings to stop.

The boat later began taking in water due to bad weather and rough sea conditions, which led to its sinking. Authorities believe the conditions played a major role in the tragedy.

A coastguard helicopter, along with three boats, was immediately sent to the location to carry out search and rescue operations. So far, 21 people have been rescued from the sea.

Officials have not shared details about where the boat started its journey or its intended destination. Investigations are expected to continue to determine the full circumstances of the incident.

The Aegean Sea is known as a common route for migrants attempting to reach Europe from regions such as North Africa and the Middle East. Many migrants use this path despite the risks involved.

Turkiye hosts millions of refugees from countries including Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, making it a key transit point for migration toward Europe.

The incident highlights the ongoing dangers faced by migrants who attempt sea crossings in unsafe and overcrowded boats, often under difficult weather conditions.
